Guedes Family

170719_Guedes WM_031While I was on the coast I had the pleasure of photographing a wonderful family. They are three strong and beautiful women. The shoot was focused around the two daughters who seemed more than excited to take photos with me. 170719_Guedes WM_009We went to a lovely beach on Salt Spring Island and started with one at a time. They chose where they wanted to go on the beach for their solo photos and were absolutely adorable!

Haylee, the youngest, chose some rocks heading from the water to a cliff. We didn’t go climbing but she gingerly walked across small crevasses and then stood there smiling at me. She started playing with her hair and giggling – and wouldn’t stop! Haylee is so gentle and sweet.

Haylee’s older sister, Aby, chose to go climbing. We went off across some logs and into the trees. She climbed a hill and grabbed a stick in a fighting stance. She moved so fast while telling these amazing stories about school, 170719_Guedes WM_013her family, her summer, and her dad that I had to be precise about when I took the photos or I had her eyes closed or mouth wide open. She is such an incredibly animated and intriguing soul.

There was absolutely no arguing when it came to the photos of them together. “The fence!” followed by “Can we climb the tree?!” As I took their photos I couldn’t believe how much they look like their parents. At one point when I asked them to tell me an embarrassing story about their mom they looked at each other with these mischievous smiles just like I’ve seen their parents do in the past. Sitting in front of me was Sandy and Travis.170719_Guedes WM_024Being able to take these photos meant so much to me. I’m not sure if I can explain why, except, because I love them. 170719_Guedes WM_036Ashlée

CBC Interview

I was checking my email and Facebook messages the other day when I noticed I had been contacted by Alya Ramadan from Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Kelowna. I called her back and was told that the day’s planning was super busy with the BC wildfires but that she’d like to talk to me the next morning. She said it was about my photography project. I had no idea how she heard about it but I was immensely excited!

Alya called me back the following morning. We talked about the project for a little bit and I guess she decided it was worth mentioning on the radio because she asked if she could call me back that evening to do a live interview! I would be at work but okay-ed it with my boss to step aside for a few minutes to take the call. I thought I’d be so nervous but I was just so excited to talk about this project!

I think it went really well. If you’d like to hear it you can follow this link to the CBC Radio West Page. It should play automatically for you but if things change it was the 4-5pm show on August 2nd. I’m not on until 40 minutes in so feel free to skip forward 😉

Auction for a family in Need

Today’s post is going to be short and to the point. There will be links at the bottom for more information

There is a fundraiser happening in our area to support a lovely family. Their son is in need of a new heart. Many local businesses have donated items for auction. It’s all being launched today. Take a look at the links and share the auction if you’d like.

It’s amazing how much communities pull together when someone is in need.

We need your help!

Remember that project I mentioned a few weeks back? The one I was given a grant for from the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance? Well, it’s time to get the ball rolling! And for that we need a lot of input from people who live in the East Kootenay!

The project is going to focus on people who stand out in the East Kootenay: Cranbrook, Kimberley, Radium, Invermere, Jaffray, Wasa, Fernie, Sparwood, Elkford, Elko, Canal Flats, Wardner, Moyie, Bull River, Fairmont, and so many places in between. We will be travelling the area talking to and photographing community members and then returning, in the spring, to many of the towns to share the final project.

As someone who grew up in the Kootenays I have a pretty good idea of the towns themselves but my social circles in them are fairly small. I’m definitely going to need help figuring out who should be included in the project. So, I created a survey. This survey is made to give suggestions and lead your mind to think about people in multiple areas of the community. You don’t have to fill in each question or give only one response per question.  It’s also set up so that you can do the survey as many times as you’d like. This way you can give suggestions for multiple towns.

If  you wouldn’t mind, perhaps you could share the survey on any social media, through email, and/or by telling someone about it. I need as many responses as soon as possible to really get an understanding of who to start contacting.

I am so excited to do this project! There are so many aspects that will be difficult but I’m really looking forward to meeting some of the amazing people that make our area what it is. Working away

I went away for two weeks and I thought I would be able to write while I was gone. Boy was I wrong! Between the lack of Internet connection and how busy I was there was no way I was going to be able to blog. I tried it once but by the time I was ready to post I had lost internet connection. I thought about it again later but I was just too tired. So here I am, two weeks later, telling you I'm back and will have so many photos to share!

Grand Opening…of sorts

I didn’t get a chance to launch my business in an exciting way. I don’t have a store front so there wasn’t a grand opening event or anything. So, I have decided that I’m going to do a giveaway. It’s going to be a giveaway with a twist though. I’ll have more details available in a week or so when the giveaway goes live.

You’ll see it first on our Facebook page so head over there and like the page to see it soon!

Brett

170629_Brett_001Brett Austin is part of Mt. Baker’s Class of 2017. Our time together was short but during that time I could see how much the people in his life mean to him – and vice versa. His family was gushing about him before he got there and he made sure to get a photo with each person separately.

It was very heartwarming to see such an incredible group of people supporting, encouraging and loving him. Standing behind him and being there for big moments – good and bad. I could really tell that each one of these people has been there for him as he’s grown into a very sweet young man.

Congratulations on graduating from high school, Brett. Good luck with your coming choices of school and career that you mentioned to me. You have a very kind heart and I think you will be wonderful at anything you choose. 170629_brett-blog_001.jpg
