I recently had the pleasure of photographing a wonderful woman named April. She is the mother of 4 talented and caring children. She cares for and encourages all the kids in her life – related or not. She is involved in her church and community, has a huge heart for young mothers and really wants to help people live better.

Her children purchased a Mother’s Day shoot as a surprise but unfortunately she was so ill over Mother’s Day weekend we had to reschedule. Last weekend I met up with her and had a wonderful time.

She mentioned that she’s the type of person who will appreciate the gift but if she doesn’t  personally like the photos she will say thank you and then hide them all forever. It was my mission to make sure she liked the photos!

We started out slowly to get her relaxed and comfortable. There was a really nice bench we could use that – I think – gave her the opportunity to sit and not worry so much about what her body was doing. She opened up and her personality came shining through. She was hilarious and absolutely adorable.

After sending her the link to her gallery she thanked me for making her feel pretty. The thing is, throughout the hour long shoot, there were multiple times I looked through the lens and said “Beautiful,” “Gorgeous,” and “You look great!” I know where she was coming from saying thank you but I simply took a photo of a beautiful woman.

But my bed is calling

One of the reasons I started my own business is because my health isn’t good enough to work a full time job. I can’t commit to being at work at 9am every Monday – Friday. I ended up pushing myself too hard because I wouldn’t take a sick day. By having my own business I can work from home while taking care of myself.

New problem. I feel fine except I can’t stay awake. I can’t take or edit photos if my eyes are closed! So far this week I have woken up on the couch, in my bed or on the floor at different times throughout the day without really knowing how I got there. On top of getting worried about what’s going on I’m starting to get really frustrated. My to-do list is piling up.

(Sorry if there are errors in this. I honestly can’t go back and read it over. I have so little energy.)

Grad Photos

I love taking Grad Photos. I usually call them Senior Photos but seeing as we don’t call our high school graduates seniors everyone thinks I am talking about the elderly.

I started my business only two months ago so I didn’t have much time to plan for grad season but I really hope to get a run on things next year. Get some senior photos done in the fall. It’s a great alternative to the traditional school photos taken inside, in a hurry, with everyone else. But seeing as that’s not an option right now I’m focusing on grad!

Insurance

Have you ever researched insurance for camera gear? There are a ton of companies that give insurance plans but few reach into Canada. While that made it easier because it narrowed the field it wasn’t easy to understand all the legal jargon. Then there’s simply trying to find the right plan for you. You don’t want to be paying extra for video equipment coverage if you don’t have any. Or being covered for lending out your equipment if you don’t lend it out! Some cover underwater photography, some to a minimum of $20,000 worth of gear. Some cover dropping or travel and others only cover in your immediate area. The best plans (in my opinion) cover theft, breakage, travel, your photography equipment AND your editing equipment – hard drives, computers, etc. Not many do that last bit.

There were some companies who had great deals and great prices but didn’t tell you they didn’t supply to Canada until you finished applying for a quote and put your address in – frustrating. Others wouldn’t give you an idea of what their pricing was until you asked for a quote – annoying. I have so many emails from companies that couldn’t do anything for me or were just way too expensive.

I did however find a wonderful company that I got fantastic (again, in my opinion) coverage through. My equipment – photo and edit – are covered in my area and when I travel. I also was able to get third party liability for my business through the same company. I decided to go with a company that was already set up for photographers. It didn’t really make sense for me to go with a company that could do photography coverage but had never really worked with many. Front Row was able to find the best package for my needs and has already worked with many people in the industry so will be able to fight for me if I ever need to make a claim.

It’s a relief knowing I have good coverage from a good company!

Busy Bee

I have been so busy today calling different companies and getting quotes for insurance. I’m trying to find the best possible business to get my equipment and company insured with. I had someone before but they shut down and then a bunch of other things happened and, well, lets just say this better get sorted fast! I want to go back to working with clients and photos instead of money and insurance companies. I have however dealt with many nice people (hinting back to the previous post).

I am also very excited today because I get to photograph a wonderful couple’s wedding this weekend!

Short and sweet but so much work to do today!

Replying to Emails

As a customer and client I really value a business’s communication skills. It can either make you feel appreciated and important to the company or like they don’t need your business.

I’ve needed to call or email many companies personally or with former employees. The ones that stood out to me and were a pleasure to work with were the ones who responded in a timely fashion.  It didn’t have to be anything big. Saying something like “…we have received your message….a little backed up…will get back to you as soon as possible…” or being honest when something goes wrong “…found this message in our junk mail…” (a month later) shows that they are interested in having you as a customer.

I really want to stay on top of emails. To respond even when I’m busy with an “I got this!” and then remember to get back to them of course. I want to make phone calls when it’s important to make the phone call. You know, not chicken out and send an email. Customer service isn’t just face to face. Especially not when your customers and potential customers could live anywhere in the world.

Just been thinking a lot about this lately as I receive inquiries and talk with businesses about different things. I think it can easily make or break a company.

To blog or not to blog?

Okay, I’m not actually asking if I should blog because I know I should but I think I might have to change my blogging schedule. I seem to remember to do it at night which means it’s the very end of the day and, well, that’s bad for me. Take last Monday for instance. I thought “It’s too late to blog right now” and decided I’d do it in the morning. Did I? Nope. Did I Tuesday evening when I remembered? Nope. Did I Wednesday when I remembered? Nope because it was almost Thursday! So now it’s Thursday and I almost didn’t blog again.

It’s not the end of the world of course but it is something that is important to me. So, I will revamp my schedule and make it work.
