Vancouver Island Music Festival

For the past two years I have joined my mother in volunteering at the Vancouver Island MusicFest (VIMF). She is the backstage coordinator for all six stages and I mainly help at the Instrument Lockup and Schleppers tent. Together (I mainly just ask her a bunch of questions and then do what she tells me to) our team makes sure every musician is where they need to be, all instruments are safe or given to the right people, and all stages have the gear they need. It’s a very long weekend of camping in a tent city, very long days, short nights, and never ending music.

One thing I definitely take advantage of while I’m there is my backstage access. I am able to take photos backstage of a majority of the acts. Serena Ryder, The Trews, Enter the Haggis, Darlingside, 54-40 and so many more. While I don’t do anything with the photos really, they are great to have for myself. Stage photos are one of my favourite types to take and it’s really nice to take a break from taking photos for others.

Even though MusicFest was a couple months ago I wanted to share some photos I took.

Hope you’re all having a great week!

Guedes Family

170719_Guedes WM_031While I was on the coast I had the pleasure of photographing a wonderful family. They are three strong and beautiful women. The shoot was focused around the two daughters who seemed more than excited to take photos with me. 170719_Guedes WM_009We went to a lovely beach on Salt Spring Island and started with one at a time. They chose where they wanted to go on the beach for their solo photos and were absolutely adorable!

Haylee, the youngest, chose some rocks heading from the water to a cliff. We didn’t go climbing but she gingerly walked across small crevasses and then stood there smiling at me. She started playing with her hair and giggling – and wouldn’t stop! Haylee is so gentle and sweet.

Haylee’s older sister, Aby, chose to go climbing. We went off across some logs and into the trees. She climbed a hill and grabbed a stick in a fighting stance. She moved so fast while telling these amazing stories about school, 170719_Guedes WM_013her family, her summer, and her dad that I had to be precise about when I took the photos or I had her eyes closed or mouth wide open. She is such an incredibly animated and intriguing soul.

There was absolutely no arguing when it came to the photos of them together. “The fence!” followed by “Can we climb the tree?!” As I took their photos I couldn’t believe how much they look like their parents. At one point when I asked them to tell me an embarrassing story about their mom they looked at each other with these mischievous smiles just like I’ve seen their parents do in the past. Sitting in front of me was Sandy and Travis.170719_Guedes WM_024Being able to take these photos meant so much to me. I’m not sure if I can explain why, except, because I love them. 170719_Guedes WM_036Ashlée
